Respite is a necessity of life. It is a word that covers a vast range of meanings and can be indicative of a state of relief which re-invigorates life, or can be associated with end of life care, and a final farewell to life itself. Respite is a characteristic of all living things and covers an enormous range of physiological, psychological and even spiritual states. The purpose of the art pieces in this gallery are to depict this state of being, both among humans and among animals. In the 21st century, a culture of continual "work-play" exists in which little time is afforded for the establishment of peace of mind. This peace of mind is invariably linked, in the concept of man, to a life-partner, though this is by no means the only source of respite. More often than not, respite is attained through solitude, or at least through a change in environment. Sometimes it happens quietly, in other times respite is brazen-faced and announces its arrival with a great show. The art pieces in this catalogue seek to provide a brief glimpse into the respite we all seek.
